At the Australian Functional Fitness Federation (AFFF), we are dedicated to promoting and advancing functional fitness throughout Australia. We aim towards becoming a nationally recognised organisation that strives to bring together athletes, coaches, and fitness enthusiasts from all backgrounds to participate in and celebrate competitive functional fitness.
Functional fitness is a dynamic and inclusive approach to exercise that emphasises movements and skills that are directly applicable to daily life and athletic performance. It combines elements of strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, agility, balance, and flexibility to create well-rounded athletes who are ready for any physical challenge.
Our mission is to provide a platform for athletes of all levels to compete, learn, and grow in the sport of functional fitness. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor, a fitness professional, or someone who simply enjoys pushing your limits and improving your overall fitness, AFFF offers a range of opportunities for you to engage with the functional fitness community.
We organise and sanction a variety of events throughout the year, including competitions, workshops, and training camps. These events bring together athletes from across the country to showcase their skills, challenge themselves, and inspire others. Our competitions are designed to test athletes’ strength, endurance, and mental fortitude while promoting camaraderie and sportsmanship.
At AFFF, we prioritise the development of our athletes and coaches. We offer educational resources, certification programs, and coaching clinics to enhance the knowledge and skills of individuals involved in functional fitness. Our commitment to fostering growth and providing ongoing support ensures that athletes and coaches have the tools they need to excel in their fitness journeys.
We also collaborate with gyms, fitness facilities, and affiliated organisations to create a network of functional fitness communities across Australia. By working together, we aim to foster a sense of unity, share best practices, and promote the benefits of functional fitness for individuals of all ages and abilities.
The Sport of Fitness
Competitive Functional Fitness is a sport which tests athletes’ proficiency across a variety of movement patterns, activities, and energy systems. Athletes must show their competency in various realms, including demonstrations of their strength, strength endurance, speed, bodyweight/gymnastics skill, and aerobic capacity.
In each competition, athletes are presented with various tasks, each of which require the completion of a certain amount of work (i.e. number of repetitions of a given movement). The athletes then attempt to complete the required movements and repetitions as fast as possible. The athlete who completes the work the fastest is the winner of that task.
Functional Fitness athletes showcase resiliency, in that they can perform to their max potential through the expression of strength, power and endurance.
